You can learn your ABC's by learning how to ski! This is what several Quebec school boards have been encouraging 12 000 of their students to do every year, thanks to the skiing and snowboarding gear and teaching material they have received through the Iniski / Inisurf at school program.
The children are taught to ski or snowboard in the schoolyard or on a nearby hill, at a local ski area or at some other site. The goal of the program is to help the children develop an appreciation for wintersports and adopt healthful outdoor lifestyle habits.
The Fondation Iniski/Inisurf was founded by the ASSQ and its partner since 1987. Since then, it has been providing teachers with a detailed program and the tools needed to teach skiing and snowboarding to children in school boards from 10 of Quebec's regions.
A minimum of 300 children must take part in the skiing or snowboarding lessons per lot of gear every year. Attaining this number usually requires the participation of 3 or 4 schools, with each usually havinguse of the gear for up to two weeks at a time. The length of the agreement between the school board and ASSQ is set at 5 years.
Provide participating school boards with the sport gear and teaching material offered in conjunction with the Iniski / Inisurf at school program: sport gear, teaching program and students' workbooks. At theend of the agreement, the school board gets to keep the gear and teaching materials.
Each school board must appoint someone to serve as a liaison between the ASSQ and the teachers participating in the program. This person's role is to prepare the offer for the schools, take reservations and co-ordinate the transportation of gear. The program manager may be a principal or vice-principal, educational advisor or teacher who has been released from his or her regular duties a few days of the year to co-ordinate the program.
To ensure the program continues to run smoothly and remains appealing to teachers, the school board is responsible for having the gear transported from one school to the next.
The gear must be stored in a location that is easily accessible by teachers.
